The total count of fatalities resulting from the transport jet which ignited and crashed has risen to 13, per latest announcements.
Mayor's Statement
“On my way to the Workers’ memorial service, I received word of a thirteenth victim that died as a result of the aircraft accident,” expressed the city mayor in a social media post. “My thoughts is with the loved ones, associates and peers of all who were taken in this recent calamity. We will get through this together.”
Victims Confirmed
A statement from UPS listed the officers operating the aircraft as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.
“Our hearts are extended to every staff member who has been touched and all in our community community – supporting you and making sure you obtain the attention and aid you need is our priority,” the firm’s communication expressed.
Inquiry Findings
Government authorities revealed that the freight aircraft’s wing caught fire and an power plant detached soon after departure from the airfield, leading to the aircraft to fall and erupt into a inferno.
The National Transportation Safety Board announced it is investigating the aircraft’s maintenance history, which was in the state for maintenance weeks before the incident.
Flight tracking records revealed the plane was on the tarmac in San Antonio, Texas from 3 September to mid-October.
“We are aware that this jet was located in that city,” remarked an investigator on Thursday, without a specific period. “We will examine all elements of maintenance that was completed, from the repair time, right up to the time of the trip.”
Retrieval of Vital Components
The pilot’s recorder and flight data recorder were retrieved, and the engine was discovered on the airfield.
The units – known as black boxes – were designed to withstand accident forces and extreme heat from infernos, and they looked to be intact when located amid the remains. Officials plan on examining data from the devices.
The plane’s last flight details indicated an altitude of that level and a speed of 210 mph before the accident.
Service History
According to aviation authority records dated that date, a fissure on a part within the tank area needed maintenance.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which said it offers airframe maintenance for UPS’s aircraft and operates a maintenance center in that city, declined to comment, but said it would work closely when investigators reached out it.
Operations Resume
Meanwhile, the hub operations continued Wednesday night with its express also known as nighttime process, representative Jim Mayer said. Each of the three landing strips at the airport were also open again.
The UPS package handling facility in this location is the firm’s biggest. The facility engages over 20,000 workers in the area, handles numerous aircraft daily and organizes in excess of a huge volume of packages each hour.
Local Reaction
A gathering was organized on the evening of that date by the area labor union, which acts for employees at the airfield, the organization’s largest shipping facility.
The union chapter, which supports staff, began the vigil with a period of reflection at 5.14pm, the approximate hour of the accident before.
“This event was so unexpected, so unexpected,” the mayor addressed the crowd of 200. “No one had a chance to part to any of those who we have lost.”
