Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
