Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
