Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
